The Role
Reporting to the Master, the Chief Officer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, administration and supervision of the deck crew. They will also be tasked with maintaining a safe navigational watch.
Principal Responsibilities
- Acting as Vessel Safety Officer and taking responsibility for the safety of personnel and the vessel, the efficient operation of the vessel and pollution prevention
- The performance of a safe navigational watch
- The maintenance of life-saving appliances and fire-fighting equipment
- Implementing Briggs’ health, safety, environmental and quality policies
- Reporting to the Master on defects, hazards, incidents and accidents
- Planning and recording of deck work (including mooring inspection documentation)
- Allocating daily work to the deck crew (including providing assistance to the engineering and catering departments when required)
- Conducting deck operations in a safe, efficient manner
- Stock control of the mooring equipment held on board
- Reviewing on-board contingency plans, risk assessments and shipboard procedures
- Updating nautical publications and charts
- Ensuring that the vessel is properly prepared for all statutory surveys and that it remains in a seaworthy condition
The Candidate
- Previous practical, hands-on experience in a position on board a vessel
- Officer of the Watch Deck II/1
- Advanced fire prevention and firefighting
- Seamanship and knowledge of deck work
- Personal survival techniques
- Proficiency with regard to survival craft and rescue boats
- GMDSS radio operator’s certificate
- Radar and ARPA certification
